Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - being used in common Skin Care

Sodium lauryl sulfate or Sodium Laureth sulfate, (SLS) is one of the most common ingredients we find in our shampoo, shower gel, soap, and other bathroom products. They are used in personal care products because they are cheap.

A small amount generates a large amount of foam, and when salt is added it thickens to give the illusion of being thick and concentrated. BUT the fact is, that SLS was originally (and still is) used as a garage floor cleaner and de-greaser. So you must ask why are they putting garage floor cleaner in our Skin care?

Testing of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium lauryl sulfate is used throughout the world for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin. A recent study at the University of Georgia Medical College, indicated that SLS penetrated Into the eyes as well as the brain, heart, liver, etc., and showed long-term retention in the tissues.

The study also indicated that SLS penetrated young childrens eyes from developing properly and caused cataracts to develop In adults.

SLS in fact has been proven to cause cancer in rats when an excessivly high concentration of SLS was soaked into a gauze pad and applied to shaved area of the rats body for months at a time.Other research has shown that SLS may cause potentially carcinogenic nitrates and dioxins to form in shampoos and cleansers by reacting with commonly used ingredients found in many products. Large amounts of nitrates may enter the blood system from just one shampooing. SLES is the alcohol form (ethoxylated) of SLS. It is slightly less irritating but may cause more drying. Both SLS and SLES can enter the blood stream.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in Skin Care - Conclusion

Potentially, SLS is perhaps the most harmful ingredients in personal care products. Studies indicate that SLS is systemic, and can penetrate and be retrained in the eye, brain, heart, liver etc., with potentially harmful long term effects. It could retard healing, cause cataracts in adults, and can keep childrens eyes from developing properly. So you must ask your self, do I want to take the risk of the potential dangers that SLS can cause me? I know I dont! (None of the products we provide contain SLS.)

Here is a example of one persons experience when confronting a Shampoo company about SLS -
Well, I heard about SLS so I went home and checked my shampoo (Vidal Sasoon). It has not got it, but others such as Vo5, Palmolive etc..they have got this substance, so I have called up to one of the companies. You probably think I had nothing better to do. No, I am just concerning our health. Well, I told them their product contains a substance that will cause people to have cancer, and u know what they said , they said "Yeah! We knew about it but there is nothing we can do about it. We need that substance to produce foam. Oh, by the way the Colgate toothpaste also contains the same substance to produce the bubbles".

Oh, my God, I have been using the Colgate since when I was born ,what the world is that, are we going to die very soon. They said they are going to send me some info. Researches have shown that in the 1980s, the chance of getting cancer is 1 out of 8000 and now in the 1990s, the chances of getting cancer is 1 out of 6, which is very serious. So I hope that you will take this seriously and pass this on to all the people you know, and hopefully, we can stop "giving" ourselves getting the cancer virus.
