What is Sunscreen?
Sunscreen (also known as sunblock,
suncream, suntan lotion) is a topical lotion that helps protect the skin from
the suns ultraviolet radiation. Sunscreen reduces sunburn and other skin damage,
ultimately leading to a lower risk of skin cancer. Many of us spend hours in
the sun to build up a nice gradual tan, if you have a nice tan you are less
likely to get badly burned, though you are still at risk of long term skin damage.
Fair skinned people are much more prone to getting sunburn, fair skinned people
usually never get a tan, they just peel and freckle, unless they are protected
by sunscreen.
How Sunscreen Works?
Sunscreen works by protecting the
skin against Ultraviolet radiation. UVB (ultraviolet radiation with wavelength
between 315-280 nm), can cause sunburn, and UVA (380–315 nm), which damages
the skin with more long-term effects, such as premature skin aging and skin
cancer. Sunscreens work by absorbing and reflecting ultraviolet light, the ingredients
used for this are usually either an organic chemical compound (such as oxybenzone)
or an opaque material that reflects light (such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide),
or a combination of both.
Why Wear Sunscreen?
Sunscreen is commonly
known by a wide range of doctors and skin care professionals as an important
way of protecting the skin from sunburn, wrinkles and long term effects such
as sun cancer and pre-mature ageing. Gone are the days where peolpe will lay
on the beach baking thier skin all day long without protection. We have learnt
from the past and seen the long term effects that this causes, the long term
damage like melanoma and skin cancer that is often fatal. Most long term damage
is done to the skin in the early childhood years when the skin is still so fair
and sensitive. Children that get sunburn regulary are at high risk of long term
damage.

How To Use Sunscreen?
Sunscreen should be applied at least
20 minutes before exposure to the sun, then reapplied every 2 - 3 hours or after
swiming in the water. Sunscreen should be applied generously to clean, dry skin
whenever you are going to be exposed to the outdoors.
